Amazon captures 2 crowns in 3rd Mayor Vicente Caballero Memorial Cup Age-Group Tennis | Sun.Star
DAVAO Oriental ace Jeleardo Amazona captured two titles in the 3rd Mayor Vicente Caballero Memorial Cup Age-Group Tennis Championships 2011 held at the Midsayap Tennis Courts in North Cotabato.
Amazona, a Palarong Pambansa 2011 bronze medalist, crushed Mikko Ringia of Koronadal, 10-4, in their boys 14-under finals match then hacked out a 10-7 win over Carlo Nono of Kabacan in the boys 16-under.
Nono, however, bounced back with a smashing 10-3 victory over Karl Laurenz Magno of Kidapawan.
Kidapawan netter Jzash Canja also scored a twin kill by thrashing Lara Nadala of Kabacan (10-1) in the girls 16-under before whipping sister Janelle (10-6) in the girls 18-under event.
Dianne Caballero of Midsayap subdued Trina Factora of Cotabato City, 10-7, to secure the girls 14-under title, while Janus Ringia of Koronadal routed Wilfredo Bentillo of Isulan, 10-2, in 10-under unisex.
In the 12-under category, Midsayap bets Abson John Alejandre and Carlyn Bless Guarde shared top honors. Alejandre overcame Janus Ringia, 10-8, for the boys crown while Guarde also won past Diadem Sasota on the same note on the distaff side.
The Caballero family awarded trophies and shirts to the winners. The champions also each got P1,000 worth of gift certificates, while the runners-up each received P500 worth of gift certificates.
A total of 123 entries joined the Philippine Tennis Association-sanctioned Group 3 event.
Philta regional vice president Juanito “Titong” Cansino, Jr. thanked the Caballero family, Mercantile Corporation and Slazenger balls for sponsoring the tennis tournament. (MLSA)
